Sherman Aaron Utsman Sr., age 87, of Bluff City, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, June 10, 2019, from the Hillview Health Center of Elizabethton. Sherman was born in Piney Flats, Tennessee, to the late John Layman Utsman and Mary Ruby Messimer Utsman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Cecil and Layman; and a sister, Dorothy Guinn. Sherman had worked in sales and was a United States Army veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict. He enjoyed racing and spending time with his family and was a member of First Christian Church of Bluff City. Sherman started building race cars at the age of 14 for drivers at Bluff City's Highland Park in 1946 and he started driving race cars at the age of 19. He was the eldest of the Bluff City racing brothers which included Layman, Cecil, Gerald and John A. He made 21 starts in the NASCAR Cup Series with nine top-10 finishes. His best result was a fifth at the Chattanooga's Boyd Speedway where he finished one position behind pole sitter Richard Petty, who was driving the No. 42 Plymouth. Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Sonja Utsman, of Louisville, Ky. and Shara Utsman, of Bradenton, Fla.; a son, Aaron Utsman and wife, Lesa, of Bluff City; five grandchildren, Joshua Utsman and wife, Lea, of Bristol, Tenn., Lindsay Earhart and husband, Aaron, of Bluff City, Amelie Galloway and husband, Scott, also of Bluff City, Ashby Cunningham and husband, Amos, of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Hunter Kirk, of Grand Haven, Mich.; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gerald Utsman and wife, Nancy, of Bluff City and John A. Utsman and wife, Ann, of Beaufort, S.C.; and one sister, Linda King and husband, Dickey, of Bluff City. A service to honor and celebrate the life of Sherman Aaron Utsman will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, in the Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Bluff City, with Mr. Ron Whitacre, minister, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Wednesday. The graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2019, at Glenwood Cemetery with Mr. Jonathan Feathers, minister, officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Joshua Utsman, Hunter Kirk, Aaron Earhart, Richie King, Dodd King and Junior Utsman. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 12:50 p.m. on Thursday.
