WISE, Va. — A weekend car crash that killed three people in Wise County remains under investigation by the Virginia State Police.

A 2006 Toyota Sienna was traveling south on U.S. Route 23 at 8:15 p.m. on Nov. 9 when the crash occurred, according to a written statement. The minivan ran off the left side of the highway, around mile marker 48, and went into the median, struck a culvert and overturned several times. It then crossed into the northbound lanes of Route 23, where it struck a northbound 2004 GMC Envoy.

The Sienna rolled over top of the GMC and came to a rest on the other side of it.

Fred B. Russell, 60, Mouthcard, Kentucky, was driving the Sienna and died at the scene. He was wearing a seat belt.

Two passengers in the GMC, Pamela Stanley, 54, and John Stanley, 52, both of Clintwood, were transported to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport. They died on Sunday. Pamela Stanley was wearing a seat belt while John Stanley was not.

Makayla Horne, 20, Clintwood, who was driving the GMC, was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries. She also was wearing a seat belt.

The crash remains under investigation.
