Update: A Lebanon, Virginia, man died Thursday morning in a crash on Interstate 81 in Washington County, Virginia, according to the Virginia State Police.

A Nissan 350Z was traveling on the Exit 17 ramp to northbound Interstate 81 when the driver lost control of the vehicle, VSP said in a news release. The Nissan crossed over the northbound lanes and struck a tractor-trailer traveling in the left northbound lane of I-81. The impact of the crash sent the Nissan into the median.

The driver of the Nissan, Michael R. White, 20, of Lebanon, Virginia, died at the scene. He was wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured in the crash.

One person is dead following a tractor trailer accident Thursday morning on Interstate 81 northbound near Exit 17 close to Abingdon.

Virginia State Police Spokesperson Corinne Geller said in an email that authorities responded to a two-vehicle crash in Washington County at 4:53 a.m. Thursday. Geller said the crash involved a tractor trailer and a car, and she said there was one confirmed fatality.

No identifying details about the crash victim were immediately available.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation’s website, motorists can currently expect delays near mile marker 17.2. As of 9:35 a.m., VDOT says traffic backups are at approximately 3 miles.

It was not initially clear if any charges have been filed.

Geller said the crash remains under investigation.
