BRISTOL, Tenn.—A Chilhowie, Virginia man was arrested Wednesday following an incident involving a gun at a local women’s medical clinic.
The Bristol Tennessee Police Department was called just before 8 a.m. to Bristol Regional Women's Center on West State Street to the report of a man with a gun.
According to Capt. Charlie Thomas, Derrick Doss, 32, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault.
"Derrick Doss was at the clinic with his girlfriend," Thomas said. "They were confronted by some of the protestors, and he went to his vehicle and retrieved a handgun."
Protesters regularly gather near the clinic, where abortions are performed.
The complainant told police that after an argument ensued, Doss went to his vehicle, retrieved a handgun, and began to load it by racking the slide.
Thomas said officers found a handgun in Doss’ possession. After reviewing the evidence and witness statements, Doss was charged and taken to the Sullivan County jail.
Doss told officers he never took the gun out of the holster, Thomas said.
No injuries were reported.
