ABINGDON, Va. Mary Jane Nagoda Swanson Shingler passed on to God on November 29, 2019. She was born on September 7, 1930, in Export, Pa. to parents who were immigrants from Yugoslavia. She was delivered at home by a midwife and was an unexpected twin. In her younger years, she was offered an exciting opportunity to play professional women's basketball in Pittsburgh. She instead chose to pursue a more long-range career in nursing. She graduated from Columbia Hospital School of Nursing, Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1951. She worked in several different areas of nursing afterward. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Mary Nagoda. Mary Jane had two siblings, Rose Balest and twin brother, Edward Nagoda who also have been deceased for several years. She was predeceased by her first husband, Gerald R. Swanson and second husband, Raymond V. Shingler. She is survived by her three children, Gerald "Jerry" (Deb) Swanson Jr. of Ghent, WV, Cathy "Cat" (Jack) McClanahan of Big Stone Gap, Va., and Stuart (Leslie) Swanson of Roanoke, Va. Mary Jane had four grandchildren, Todd (Pamela) Swanson, Kelly (Joshua) Linville, Meredith (Matthew) Rouse and Sam McClanahan. She also had two step grandchildren, Jennifer Ceravone and Chris DellaMea, and eight great-grandchildren. Her family would like to thank and recognize Connie Willis and husband Greg. Connie has been a special friend and caregiver for the past four years. Connie's kindness, gracious loving care and dedication made Mary Jane's final years happy and blessed. A word of appreciation goes out to those who have helped Mary Jane through this difficult time to include Janie and Earl Workman, Connie and Jay Kinder, Molly Hortenstine, Deanna Reynolds, Julia Bragg, Becky Stapleton, Evelyn Nunez, Marilyn and Dean Tate, JoAnn and Bob Spratt and her fellow Christians at Abingdon Church of Christ. Many, many thanks to all the special nurses, housekeeping, dietary and administrative staff at Abingdon Health and Rehab. Center for their patient and generous care. Curtis Edward Smith, 76, of Lebanon, Va., passed away on Friday, November 29, 2019, at his home. Born on April 25, 1943, in Russell County, Va., he was the son of the late Curtis and Arlee "Granny" Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Jenna Lynn Smith; two infant grandsons; brothers, Charlie, Robert, and Giles Smith; sisters, Mary Jackson and Junanita Maxfield. Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Bertie Faye Smith; sons, Bobby, Randy and Doug Smith; grandchildren, Angela and Kevin Sheppard; sisters, Delzie Artrip and husband, Frank, Dorena Smith, Patty Honaker, and Gay Keith and husband, Will, all of Lebanon; brothers, Norman Smith and Collier Smith and wife, Garnie, all of Roanoke, Va.; numerous nieces and nephews. Edna M. Grimes O'Dell, age 95, of Bristol, Tenn., passed away on Friday, November 29, 2019, at Oakmont at Gordon Park. Joan "Beverly" Hopkins-Heckford passed away on November 21, 2019, at her home in Lebanon, Va. She was born on September 6, 1939, in Two Dot, Montana. She was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Heckford; parents, Ernest and Vesta Hopkins; brother, Joseph Hopkins; daughters, Julie Jonita Heckford and Josie June Heckford-Armstead; and granddaugher, Leah Heckford. She was survived by her children, Judie Jae Heckford (Dennis), John Jay Heckford, Joseph James Heckford (Cherie), Joan Jarita McGlothlin (Raymond), and Jerry Jess Heckford (Leslie). She is survived by 25 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held on November 23, 2019, at the Heckford Family Cemetery in Elk Garden, Va. Services were held by Lee Likens of Abingdon, Va. Service Sentiments were spoken by family and friends. We were led in song, Amazing Grace, by Kayla Heckford. LEBANON, Va. Jane Russell Lasley Hall, age 64, went to be with her Lord, Friday, November, 29, 2019. She was born January 25, 1955, the daughter of Rufus Charles and Rosa Ann Sword Lasley. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Grover Leon Hall; sons, Brian Neal Hall and Leon Russell Hall; brothers, Rufus "Tobe" Lasley, James Edward Lasley, Robert Earl Lasley; sisters, Linda Lasley and Gail Shoemaker. Jane is survived by daughters, Carrie Melinda Hall and David Sheppard, Pamela Dawn Hall and Mark Williams; son, Aaron Rufus Hall; sisters, Myrtle Louise Dye, Wanda Faye Wolfe, Rebecca Ann Dotson, and Margaret Sue "Penny" Lasley; grandchildren, Dominick Noel Hall and Donald Leon Sheppard. Also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. MARION, Va. Joe Patrick Hutton, age 80, passed away Friday, November 29, 2019, at the Carrington Place in Rural Retreat, Va. Joe was born in Seven Mile Ford, Va. to the late Pat L. Hutton and Anna Belle Kell Hutton and was preceded in death by his half brothers and sisters. He worked at the Town of Marion for over 25 years and was the maintenance supervisor at Rose Lawn Cemetery. Prior to becoming sick, Joe could be seen walking throughout the town of Marion. Survivors include his son, Steve Hutton and wife, Christy, of Marion, Va.; his daughter and caregiver, Pam Hutton and David Smith of Marion, Va.; grandchildren, Santana Cline and husband, Ethan, of Fort Campbell, Ky., Corey Beth Hutton Dutton and husband, Scott, of Rural Retreat, Va.; brother, Doc Edward Hutton of Fla.; sister, Susie Blevins and husband, Jack, of Chilhowie, Va.; the mother of his children, Charlotte Hutton; several nieces and nephews also survive. Randy Morris Felts, age 64, passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2019, in the Select Specialty Hospital of Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born February 4, 1955, to the late Bernard Ray Felts and Vera Morris Felts in Radford, Va. In addition to his parents, Randy was also preceded in death by his first wife, Debra Kay Lundy Felts; brother, Ted Ray Felts. He is survived by his second wife, Lynn Felts; son, Rayland William Felts of Hood River, Ore.; daughter, Courtney Felts of Wilmington, N.C.; two step-daughters, Emma Loncharic McGraw and husband, Nathan, of Abingdon, Va. and Erin Loncharic of Dallas, Texas; sister, Judy Meade and husband, Joe, of Naples, Fla.; and two grandsons, Lukas McGraw and Greyson McGraw. A 1978 graduate of Old Dominion University, Randy spent his entire life as a resident of Virginia. After graduation, Randy built a successful career as an IT professional and always took great pride in working hard to provide for his family. Outside of work, Randy maintained a passion for several different hobbies Motorcycles, airplanes and movies to name a few. He was a 33rd Scottish Rite Mason and a Past Master of the Abingdon Masonic Lodge No. 48. He was also a member of the Kazim Temple of Roanoke and a Past President of the Desert Sand Shrine Club. A great storyteller, Randy was always happy to entertain a group by recounting one of his many adventures as an accomplished caver. Close friends and family have heard his favorite stories so many times, that his memory is certain to live on for generations. He will truly be missed. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2019, at 6 p.m. at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Hwy., Abingdon, VA, with Stephen Lowe officiating. RURAL RETREAT, Va. Sarah Rosalea Pickle, age 28, went to be with the Lord on Friday, November 29, 2019, at the Bristol Regional Medical Center. Sarah was born in Smyth County, Va. and was a 2010 graduate of Marion Senior High School. She enjoyed going fishing with her dad, going to McDonalds and to the several churchs she attended. Sarah always had a smile for everybody. Survivors include her mother, Deanna Doyle and husband, Mark; her father, Richard Ray Pickle and wife, Dawn; grandparents, Don and Juanita Pickle and Bill and Lynda Watson; sister, Hilarry Woods and special friend, Eric Rhodes; niece, Keiren Woods; step sister, April Hankins and husband, Aaron; and her niece, Olivia. Sarah is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins, her extended family and her dog, Brownie. Sophie Gourley, 18, of Bristol, Tenn., passed away on Wednesday, November 27, 2019, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was a life long resident of Bristol, Tenn. born on October 9, 2001. Sophie was a home school high school graduate and was a team member of Chick-Fil-A at the Pinnacle in Bristol, Tenn. She had attended Grace Point Church. Sophie was a very gifted artist, loved writing poetry, and a talented photographer. She was an animal lover and was known to everyone as "Sweet Sophie". Sophie is survived by her mother, Shannon Shortt and her husband, Russell; her father, Tommy Gourley; one brother, Chandler Gourley; two step-siblings, Isaac Shortt and Madison Shortt; her maternal grandparents, Donna and Kenneth Epperson; her paternal grandparents, Joan and Tommy Gourley; and paternal great grandmother, Pauline Green. The family will receive friends from 5 until 6:45 p.m., Monday, December 2, 2019, at Grace Point Church in Bristol, Tenn.
