ABINGDON, Va. — Traffic in Abingdon today will be affected by the funeral procession for Abingdon High School senior Kirk E. Nairn, according to the Abingdon Police Department.

Nairn was an Abingdon High senior who died in a car crash Thursday night. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. at Highlands Fellowship Church on Watauga Road. A committal service will then be held at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Highway. Because authorities anticipate a large procession, the Abingdon Police Department, Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police will control all signalized intersections from the church to the cemetery.

Officers will stop traffic sometime between noon and 1 p.m. for the procession, police said in a news release. Motorists are advised to avoid Cummings Street and West Main Street.

To help eliminate congestion on Cummings Street, the VSP and the Virginia Department of Transportation will close the ramps at Interstate 81’s Exit 17, both northsound and southbound, to prevent stopped traffic on the ramps from backing up on to the interstate, the release states.
