INDEPENDENCE, Va.—The Grayson County Sheriff's Office has charged an Independence pair with murder after a child was attacked and killed by a dog.
John Underwood II and Terra Connell have been charged with second-degree murder.
The Sheriff's Office began investigating the vicious dog attack on Jan. 6. The babysitters, Underwood and Connell, have been in custody since Jan. 7, when they were charged with felony child neglect.
On Jan. 8, the 15-month-old victim died as a result of her injuries. After further investigation, Investigator A.G Horton located and interviewed witnesses who previously observed the animal being aggressive toward other animals and humans, according to a written statement.
Inv. Horton and Sheriff Richard Vaughan consulted with the Commonwealth’s Attorney and were advised to seek additional charges against the two. The statement said Horton presented probable cause evidence to a magistrate and obtained warrants against Underwood and Connell for felony homicide.
Both subjects are being held without bail at the New River Valley Regional Jail.
