Graduation ceremonies for Northwood High School will be held May 29 at 7 p.m. in the high school’s new gym. Baccalaureate services will be held May 25 at 7 p.m. at Madam Russell Church.

Graduation speakers will be the top 10 percent of the class including valedictorian Lauren Michelle Griffin, salutatorian Brandon Chase Surber who is also class president, Caleb Warren Ashley, Caleb Franklin DeBord, Tessa Allyson Seidel and Anthony Dylan Burkett.

Surber is the son of Roger and Missy Surber of Saltville. High school activities include football, basketball, 4-H, member of Beta Club and recipient of a Patrick Henry Scholarship. Future plans include athletic training for four years then physical therapy school. He will attend Emory & Henry College.

Ashley is the son of James and Lisa Ashley of Tannersville. High school activities include football, Beta Club and Virginia Residential Governor’s School for Agriculture. He will attend Virginia Tech and plans a career in engineering and a farm.

DeBord is the son of Darrell DeBord and Mary Ellen DeBord of Saltville. High school activities include Beta Club, baseball, forensics, scholastic bowl, SWAC, foreign language club and art club. He has received the Tom Burkett Scholarship and Patrick Henry Scholarship and will attend Emory & Henry College majoring in psychology and biology, then attending medical school to become a psychiatrist.

Burkett is the son of Barbara Jones and William Burkett of Chilhowie. High school activities include Marching Band, SWAC, Scholastic Bowl, Beta Club and Academic Letter. He will attend Virginia Commonwealth University majoring in chemistry and then attend pharmacy school.

Griffin is the daughter of Greg and Leola Griffin of Saltville. Her high school activities include drum major in the Marching Band, Destination Imagination, Scholastic Bowl and Beta Club. She received the Patrick Henry Scholarship and will attend Emory & Henry College and medical school.

Seidel is the daughter of Ms. Terry Seidel of Saltville. Her high school activities include competitive dancer, cheerleader, SCA, Northwood News Team, Beta Club, Academic Letter and class officer. She plans to attend Mars Hill University to study for apparel and interior merchandising.
