“The Girl in the Steel Corset” is the first in The Steampunk Chronicles by Kady Cross. It takes place in London, 1897 and begins with the introduction of 16-year-old Finley Jayne, who has a secret: she has a dark side she cannot control. When that dark side appears, she does things — dangerous things — that she doesn’t always remember later.

After a nasty run-in with a lecherous lord, Finley is injured and discovered by Griffin King and Sam Morgan. Griffin is Duke of Greythorne and takes Finley to his house where he, Sam and some other unusual people live. The group is unusual because they all have strange abilities; Griffin is able to access the Aether (the land of the dead) and through the Aether can control emotions; Sam is part machine and has a wondrous healing power and terrific strength; Griffin’s Aunt Cordelia Marsden is a telepath; and Emily O’Brien can ‘talk’ to machines.
