MARION, Va. — The walls in Randy Glass’ classroom are covered with his interests — a Darth Vader mask here, some Civil War memorabilia there, baseball cards stacked in boxes in the corner.

But it’s the function of the room itself — and his role in it — that might not have come to be if a high school program hadn’t encouraged him to go to college.
