BRISTOL, Va. -- Sherry King stood behind the podium and convinced her students to settle down into their seats in the gym. She then turned the microphone over to Washington County Sheriff Fred Newman, who she believed was about to launch into a school safety speech with several of the county's school resource officers.

The High Point Elementary School principal had no idea the whole thing was a ruse to surprise her with the news that she was selected the 2013 National Distinguished Principal from Virginia.
