ABINGDON, Va. — Sheriff Fred Newman enlisted the help of 17 local, state and federal law enforcement agencies in a fugitive round-up launched at 6 a.m. Thursday that he dubbed “Operation Firecracker.”

During an afternoon news conference, Newman said the initiative was done to try and apprehend several wanted men and women who were being sought on various charges that included several serious felonies.
